What is a data mesh?

A data mesh is an architecture pattern where individual domain teams, marketing, finance, product, own their own data as a product, with self-serve infrastructure and federated governance, instead of one central team owning every pipeline. It trades a single bottleneck for distributed ownership, at the cost of coordinating standards across teams that no longer share one pipeline.

How it works

Each domain team is responsible for publishing its own data as a well-documented, reliable "product," with its own quality bar and its own pipeline. A thin layer of federated governance, shared standards for naming, access, and interoperability, keeps those independently owned products usable by everyone else, while self-serve infrastructure lets a domain team build without waiting on a central platform team for every change.

Why it matters

Centralizing every pipeline through one data team scales badly once an organization has more domains than that team has capacity for: every new source becomes a ticket in someone else's backlog. A mesh removes that bottleneck by pushing ownership to the teams closest to the data, at the cost of needing real governance discipline so ten independently owned products do not turn into ten incompatible ones.

OptimaFlo and data mesh

OptimaFlo does not implement a data mesh. What is real: each workspace runs isolated from every other workspace, and under BYOC, each workspace gets its own catalog and its own deployment inside your cloud account. That is tenant isolation, useful on its own, but it is not the same thing as domain teams independently owning and publishing their own data products under federated governance. If your organization is building toward a true data mesh, per-workspace isolation is a piece of infrastructure you could build on top of, not a mesh OptimaFlo hands you out of the box.
